Do You Need Study Abroad Insurance?

If you're planning to travel overseas with a study program, then it's prudent to consider getting study abroad insurance. Even though it's likely your foreign experience will go off without a hitch, things can happen. It's always a good idea to be covered in case of illness or injury. There are a variety of study abroad insurance programs especially designed for students like you.

Many of these programs offer extensive coverage with a low deductible. Also, you're likely to receive access to a network in your native language where you can call for emergency assistance 24 hours a day. This network can refer and direct you to the medical facility where you need to go. There are other benefits of study abroad insurance programs, like life insurance and even prescription coverage.

It can be a daunting task to decide which policy is right for you. Because there are so many, you may need the assistance of an impartial adult like a counselor, teacher or parent to help you decide. Many universities can refer you and even help you acquire study abroad insurance with a trusted and reputable company.

While there are plenty of great providers out there, there are also some scammers. To avoid being taken, do your homework and investigate a company's history with associations like the Better Business Bureau to ensure you're dealing with a trustworthy company. Traveling overseas is expensive enough, the last thing you need is to throw away your money on a shoddy and poorly written insurance plan.

The length of time which you'll be in a foreign country has a bearing on the type of insurance you get, or if you choose to get it at all. Some study programs are as short as one week. While I would recommend insurance for any duration trip, some students reserve study abroad insurance for longer trips like summers or semesters.

After locating a list of potential companies to provide your study abroad insurance, research each one thoroughly. Consult your guidance counselor or staff member in charge of study abroad programs for assistance. They can help make the process easier. Don't be afraid to ask questions – it's crucial to be informed about every part of the process. After all, it's your money and more importantly, your health at stake!
