The Benefits of Language Study Abroad
![]() |
Are you studying a foreign language? If so, then you should consider the benefits of language study abroad. After all, there's only so much you can learn from books and classrooms. To truly learn a language, you must immerse yourself in it. This is where language study abroad comes in handy!
No matter what language you are trying to learn, you can experience it firsthand with a language study abroad program. Many of these programs last for summers or semesters, giving you enough time to truly experience the language you're learning up close and personal. Let's say you're studying French. Why not go to Paris or another city in France? While there, you can live with a French family and conduct yourself as a French citizen. By speaking French everywhere you go, you'll be amazed at how quickly you can pick up on the nuances of the language.
If Spanish is your language of choice, head down to Mexico or journey to Spain. Not only will you live like a Spanish speaking person, you'll talk like one, too! Eat Spanish food, wear Spanish clothing, and totally immerse yourself in the language. After a few months of this, you'll be fluent. However, Spanish and French aren't the only language study abroad programs available out there. No matter what language you want to learn, you can find a program to fit it.
Some of the most difficult languages to learn are Japanese and Chinese dialects. By traveling to the Asian country of your choice and spending some time there, you'll speak and be spoken to like a native. You will learn the language as a child would – by speaking it all day, every day, for an extended period of time. This is truly one of the most effective ways to become fluent in a dialect other than your own.
While there's certainly nothing wrong with learning a new language at your college or university, a language study abroad program offers benefits that the classroom simply cannot. Not only will you learn the language via immersion, you'll get to make friends and have adventures that just aren't available in your hometown!
To find out more about the best language study abroad programs out there for you, speak to a trusted counselor or guide at your school. They can direct you to some of the best programs that are suited to your academic and personal needs.
